This article explores the idea of a web based advertising that is more similar to TV spots than Newspaper ads. It would involve pages with video ads popping up in between the navigation of web pages forcing users to wait for the commercial ad to finish. This plan seems to be better in terms for commercial monetization, but worse for the overall user experience. As I see it, the way for this plan to actually work would be for the user to not mind the videos too much. No Country For Old Men

When I first saw the movie No Country For Old Men I was not entirely impressed. Sure I liked the cinematic aspects and I thought that the film was visually captivating, but something just didn’t resonate. One reason why the film let me down is because I had very high expectations; after all it is the Coen brothers, the same guys who made Fargo. The reason why the movie was not able to fully resonate was because it was based on the theme of an aging man trying to find his place in life. I’m not an old man. I could not fully relate. Sure I know many men who are in similar positions to the film’s protagonist, but I had not experienced it myself. I didn’t fully understand. The best way to understand something is to experience it. I have had many experiences in my life, but not those comparable to those of a much older man.
The film made me realize that in order for it to resonate completely and be effective to me, I would have to have experiences or emotions similar to those of the protagonist. One of the greatest aspects of technology is that it allows ordinary people to have many experiences. For the most part, more experiences equals more understanding. Technology, if used effectively, can create more of an understanding in the world creating a global community that is better off from the one that lacked the understanding.

Italy Gets With It

A few established directors in Italy have recently made the move of producing videos for the Internet. (see NY Times Article). Hell yeah. Get with the times Italy. Out of all the countries in Europe, Italy has some of the lowest levels of Internet access in America. The jump from big screen to small is a trend that has been followed fairly closely in this blog, and it brings about an entire new style of directing. My optimistic opinion about the spread to Europe is the subsidies which European countries give their fillmmakers for producing films. Pay me to make an Internet video in Europe? I’ll do it.
